Bernard Matthews to relaunch Turkey Twizzlers

A 3m high statue of a Turkey Twizzler is unveiled at Bernard Matthews’ Great Witchingham Hall in Norwich

BERNARD MATTHEWS is bringing back the iconic – and controversial – Turkey Twizzler 15 years after it was taken off the market.

Two lines, an original Tangy Tomato flavour, as well as Chilli Cheese, will be introduced to all major UK retailers, starting with Iceland on 20 August.

They will have a recommended retail price of £3 for eight Twizzlers.

Turkey Twizzlers were a staple of school diets for children in the 1990s and early noughties.

But they fell out of favour after TV chef Jamie Oliver said they were bad for children’s health during his campaign to improve school dinners.

Despite this, Turkey Twizzlers have retained a cult following. In 2018 a petition to bring them back to the market gained 30,000 signatures.

The new versions of the processed turkey snack are billed as healthier products.

The old Turkey Twizzler was just 34% meat and had 137 kcal, while the new version was 70% meat and had 87 kcal, Bernard Matthews’ marketing director David Leigh told the BBC

Nutritionist Sarah Schenker added: “Turkey Twizzlers have listened to the public and completely transformed themselves into a much-improved product.

“They now have a nutritional profile they can be confident in.

“High in good quality protein and lower in fat, saturates, salt and sugar.

“You can create a balanced meal by teaming them with plenty of veg such as a corn on the cob and broccoli.”
