ST EWE FREE RANGE EGGS has secured a site for a new packing centre in a significant expansion for the firm.
The new site, formerly a county council-owned farm, is close to the company’s existing packing facility on the family farm but has far better transport links.
Bex Tonk’s said that eggs would continue to be produced and processed at the existing HQ, but packing and distribution would move to the new site.
St Ewe’s now packs eggs for producers from across the South West and Wales and has listings in national retailers, and exports egg to countries like Hong Kong and Dubai.
The company successfully applied for a £731,000 grant towards the new packing centre’s capital costs under Defra’s RDPE Growth Programme.
Ms Tonks said: “We have been hugely grateful for the support of so many in helping us obtain the EAFRD grant, Johnny Alford and his team for the purchase of the land at Resparveth Farm and Martin Woodley and Cllr Bob Egerton with our planning application and subsequent planning development, which was all submitted and approved in the space of two months.
“All of this was achieved during lockdown, which has been quite extraordinary, and we are so thankful to Cornwall Council for believing in and helping our vision for not only the business, but for the local community, come to fruition. Thank you!”
Cornwall council’s economic growth manager, David Rodda MBE, added: Helping businesses to access the various grants that are available can help to accelerate their growth ambitions and deliver real benefit to Cornwall.
“In this case, St Ewe Eggs is creating new employment opportunities in a rural area as well as growth opportunities for the farmers that supply it with eggs and its wider supply chain.
“This means that the economic benefit of this grant will be felt by multiple businesses.”
