Chicken may be the most popular protein consumed in McDonald’s restaurants here in the UK, but that could change if its vegan version proves a hit.

Stores in Norway are trialling a meat-free substitute that comprises mashed potato mixed with chickpeas, carrots, onion and corn.

It follows pasty specialist Greggs, which attributed much of a 10% rise in sales at the beginning of 2019 to the popularity of its vegan sausage roll.

McDonalds also offers a vegan “McFalafal” in Sweden. Its menu in India comprises a much wider range of vegetarian dishes, including the popular McAloo Tikki burger.
