NFU MUTUAL has said it will offer uncollected egg cover free-of-charge to customers for the rest of this year.

The insurer said it would help protect egg producers if collections are disrupted by events such as the farmer, egg packer or processor’s staff becoming ill or self-isolating because of coronavirus.

NFU Mutual confirmed the cover would be available to existing and new customers with relevant policies and would remain in place for free until 31 December 2020.

Chris Walsh, farm insurance specialist at the insurer said: “Throughout the Covid-19 crisis we have kept closely in touch with our members and the farming unions to understand their changing protection needs and have responded with free COVID-19 uncollected egg cover.

‘Risk of loss’

“This is particularly important for the UK’s egg producers, who adhere to very high storage and hygiene standards which mean there are tight windows when eggs can be collected after laying, leaving producers at risk of serious financial loss if collections can’t be made.

“Our poultry specialists and network of agents across the country are continuing to liaise closely with producers and the farming unions so we can respond quickly as new risks emerge.”

NFU Mutual has said it is offering £32m worth of support to its customers through the coronavirus pandemic with a range of measures that include free public liability insurance for farmers selling produce directly to the public.
