THE NFU has launched a poultry-sector-specific plan outlining opportunities and asks for farms to improve their resilience.
The plan outlines priority areas for poultry production as the union sees it and focuses on three ‘pillars’: resource efficiency, carbon storage and renewables and the bioeconomy.

Each farming sector the NFU represents launched a similar plan.
Speaking at the NFU’s annual conference and AGM, deputy president Tom Bradshaw said: “In the current economic climate, the production of affordable, climate-friendly food, energy and fibre is more important than ever.
“These sector plans are just a starting point and there is much more work to do within government, the industry, and research and development, if we are all to be successful in our collective ambition to reach net zero.”
Sector resilience
NFU poultry board chair James Mottershead added: “The poultry sector is proud of its track record as a resilient, innovative and efficient industry, producing a cost-effective and nutritious protein for consumers.
“With the combined challenges of rising input costs, climate change and avian influenza, it’s important that farmers, policymakers and the supply chain work together to maintain the resilience of the sector and ensure both financial and environmental sustainability for farmers.
“As an industry, we’ve already made great progress on reducing inputs and improving our productivity, but there is more we can do that will not only help mitigate climate change but also improve the profitability and resilience of British poultry meat and egg production.”
